The story follows Gregory, a lonely giraffe living in the African savannah who is fed up because he has no other giraffes to play with. Since the other animals only interact with their own kind, Gregory comes up with a "big idea" to disguise himself as different animals to join their games.
Throughout the book, Gregory tries various disguises, including:
-
Ostrich: He is rejected for being too slow.
-
Rhino: He is told he is not strong enough to wrestle.
-
Crocodile: He is dismissed because giraffes are considered poor swimmers.
-
Lion: He is told he is too tall and will scare away their prey.
- Elephant: The elephants simply find his disguise ridiculous and laugh.
