Why does a sunflower seed germinate?
Why do sunflowers need light and water?
How does a sunflower scatter its seeds?
A sunflower starts life as a seed buried in the soil. The seed splits open and a shoot grows upward out of the ground. Green leaves appear in pairs up the stem. Finally, a ring of bright yellow petals unfurls. Other plants have a similar life cycle, but a cactus has prickly stems instead of leaves and a pitcher plant eats insects.
