The story follows a small fish named Terrence who struggles with swimming. While his friends swim fast and straight, Terrence tends to "waggle" from side to side and zig-zag through the water.
His primary goal is to impress his father and win a trophy similar to one his father once won. During an underwater race, Terrence initially falls behind, but after receiving advice from his father to move his fins and tail in unison, he begins to swim with incredible speed—described as moving "like a torpedo". He ultimately wins the race, and the story concludes with his father expressing pride and encouraging him to always stay true to himself.
