The story follows Sugar as she reaches the age where she must leave her family tree to find her own way in the world. Initially feeling unsure, she tries to be brave and eventually finds a new home in a tall tree.
While living in her new nest, she is befriended by a neighboring family of bush tail possums. They invite her for dinner, and after she eagerly eats their flower nectar and honey, they give her the nickname "Sugar" because of her sweet tooth.
